Story

Hi, I’m Calvin Mui. I’m 20, born in Hong Kong.

  1. Growing up. My dad is a businessman. I remember him on his phone almost every hour, usually with someone different each time. Doing business in Hong Kong is very relationship-driven, and so many of his deals only happened because he, or a partner of his, knew the right person. He once told me, “Son, do you know the human brain can only keep up a relationship with about a hundred people?” I still remember that.
  2. 9. My dad’s business moved to mainland China, so we moved too. Living between two cultures and three languages shaped a lot of what I do now.
  3. 14. My dad hired a tutor to teach me neural networks. I was the kid who drew neural networks on a sheet of paper in school.
  4. 15. I trained my first real AI model, a CNN on the MNIST dataset that reads handwritten digits. Watching it learn to recognise numbers on its own felt like magic. ChatGPT didn’t even exist yet.
  5. 16. I went deeper into deep learning, NLP and TensorFlow, and earned three Coursera certifications along the way.
  6. 17. I started my first year at HKUST, back in Hong Kong. A friend got me into trading forex, and my strategy was built on one pattern: big players swap currencies in batches, so spotting the first batch tells you what’s coming.
  7. 17. I was paying fees on every trade, and I started asking who actually gets rich here. In a casino it’s the house. In markets it’s the market maker, the one in the middle, closing the gap between buyers and sellers. From that moment on, every business opportunity just seemed like an arbitrage to me.
  8. 18. I didn’t want a life of watching charts. I’d rather create value directly, with people. So I started building AI systems for business owners in Hong Kong, and one of those clients is how I started tutoring.
  9. 19. I founded Autoeight. I’d noticed how many businesses struggle to find the other side, the way a trader can’t open a position when no one is providing liquidity. So I decided to become the market maker. Today I route capital through my network, connecting founders who need capital, or want to protect it, with the people who specialise in exactly that. That’s the arbitrage I chose. And if the brain can only hold a hundred relationships, AI lets me hold every single one.
  10. Now. This journey has had plenty of ups and downs. I had to become someone who could sit across the table from people far more accomplished than me. Since then, Autoeight has built relationships around the world, and I’ve outgrown who I was more times than I can count. Next, I want to take Autoeight into more sectors and more markets, and bring unique value to the people who need it.

I picture the economy as a body, with money as the nutrients. Markets help send it to the places that can grow the most with it. That’s the work I want my business to be part of.
